Music is a key part of our curriculum at St.Mark’s, and our children participate fully in a wide range of musical activities and experiences. We aim to deliver the music curriculum musically and vibrantly. As a school, we are highly committed to the provision of specialist musical teaching, where our music teacher delivers the music curriculum, working closely with class teachers to fully integrate musical learning in every year group. We are also dedicated to our new Wider Opps programme, where every child in 3 year groups has a musical instrument that is theirs to learn in Key Stage 2. Other aspects of the curriculum include:
- Performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians, including samba, funk band and glee club.
- Learning to sing and to use our voices, creating and composing music on our own and with others, having the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, using technology appropriately and having the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understanding and exploring how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and using appropriate musical notations.
- Composing using our instruments, including composing for film and song-writing.
It is our hope that at. St Mark’s, your children will eventually leave our school musically skilled, have a deeper understanding of and appreciation for different musical genres and ultimately, a love for music.
