Today,  Opal Class took part in an exciting STEM enrichment workshop – Why building grew up?

The children learnt about what engineering is and some famous and not so famous engineers. They then learnt about the importance of foundations to make sturdy towers and how triangles are the strongest shape in engineering. They applied this knowledge to practical challenges with cup towers and triangle bricks. Finally, they applied everything they’d learnt to take on a tower building challenge using given materials and following specifications.

Check out what they got up to below!

Follow up activities:

Children could try building their own towers at home using basic materials or construction materials and thinking about foundations, use of triangles and making their structures strong and sturdy.

Notice the shapes of towers you see and use of triangles in structures and talk about how engineers helped to build them.
