This week, Year 5 have truly brought their learning to life through drama as part of our work on Street Child by Berlie Doherty. After reading Chapters 1–4, the children explored key moments from Jim Jarvis’ difficult journey and used their performance skills to create powerful freeze frames of six important scenes from the story.
Each group carefully considered their characters’ emotions, thoughts, and body language. When tapped on the shoulder, pupils stepped into role and spoke as their character – sharing what they might have been thinking or feeling in that moment. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop empathy and deepen understanding of the characters and the hardships faced by children in Victorian times.
We are so proud of the thoughtful, moving performances and the confidence shown by all pupils. The drama work has given us lots of ideas and inspiration for writing diary entries in role next week.
Well done, Year 5!
